Fused Deposition Modelling or FDM is what most people think of when they think 3D printing. It is one of the more common 3D printing technologies and also one of the most versatile, but also most misunderstood. Most people assume FDM is only ok for very basic prototypes and models but FDM parts are also used in very intense aerospace and automotive applications as well as a world of other uses.

FDM extrudes a plastic filament material through a nozzle, laying it down one layer at a time. FDM can make parts with complex geometries as well as simple housings and fixtures. Due to the restrictions of the process any overhanging features will require support material. This support needs to be removed in post process.

FDM’s wide range of material options make it a great choice for quick prototype and low volume production.

Advantages of FDM

Strength

FDM printed parts are available in a variety of high-performance plastics for applications that require resistance to the elements.

Large Build

QSY can produce FDM parts with large build volumes up to 24″ x 36″ x 36″

Rapid Turnaround

FDM parts do not require tooling which reduces the manufacturing lead time from weeks to days, allowing for faster innovation and speed to market.

Complex Geometry

Geometries that are too complex or costly for CNC machining can be printed easily, allowing you to add complexity without additional cost.

Applications for FDM

Prototypes or functional models

Quick housings or enclosures

FAQ's

What is FDM 3D printing?
FDM 3D printing service uses a thermoplastic filament that is melted and deposited layer by layer to create a solid part. It is an affordable and versatile additive manufacturing process that can print various types of plastics. FDM 3D printing is commonly used for low-cost prototyping, functional parts, and end-use products in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods.
